Our Values
The ORFG values openness and inclusivity. Open research yields greater impact to improve society. Inclusivity ensures that funders, large or small, are invited to participate in our movement to improve the impacts of research and scholarship through openness.
Mission
The Open Research Funders Group (ORFG) is a partnership of funding organizations committed to the open sharing of research outputs and other forms of scholarship. ORFG explores how research funders can advance open science via policies and practices that increase sharing and collaboration across the global research enterprise. ORFG identifies policies that benefit society by accelerating the pace of discovery, reducing information-sharing gaps, encouraging innovation, and promoting reproducibility.
What We Do
The ORFG centers its activities around three core principles:
Facilitating knowledge exchange. The ORFG offers opportunities to learn about open research policies and practices in the global research community.
Providing Community. The ORFG connects funders in a community of practice to participate in discussions and collaborations of shared importance regarding open research
Extending influence. The ORFG facilitates the exploration of funding alignment opportunities, impacting policy makers and institutions, and initiating and participating in national and international dialogues on open research.
Structure
The Open Research Funders Group (ORFG) is an initiative of Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that advances open systems for research and education that enable everyone, everywhere, to access, contribute to, and benefit from the knowledge that shapes our world.
The Open Research Funders Group was conceived in an October, 2015, meeting convened by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and SPARC. This forum of open access stakeholders included representatives from more than 50 organizations. It offered a unique opportunity for participants to share experiences, concerns, strategies, and questions regarding open access and open data.
